US Open Golf
Yesterday Sara and I went to the US Open out in Mamaroneck, NY. Fun time, we walked around the course for couple hours, drank pepsi, ate hot dogs and warm salted nuts, and then settled at the 18th hole to watch a couple pairs finish up the course. The golf was good to watch. It was especially great, however, to just get out of the city and get out to the country, walk around in the grass, chill out, get some fresh air and exercise. I think that was the best part for me.
Also of special note was the intense tv coverage infrastructure. At this kind of event, its especially apparent how much really goes into broadcasting a live sporting event worldwide. The golf course is basically open land, and NBC has to pretty much build an communications network from the ground up, which has to support multiple fixed cameras, multiple roaming cameras, variosu camera teams, wireless linkups, remote interviews, studio setups, blimp cameras, commentators etc.. all live, in real time. I think the fact that its on a golf course makes it even more amazing. For other sporting events, such as the US Open Tennis, they all ready have much of it built. The stadium is built for media support, and so are the surrounding structures. But for golf, you’re really just dealing with open land.
So, I was especially facinated at all the tech happenin around us. It was cool seeing the guerrila teams of roaming cameramen try to get a good position on the players and set up the wireless linkup in time.. and it was awesome seeing the crane camera guy do his thing. Equally amazing were the super intensity scaffolding structures they created.. they had giant bleachers, camera towers, entire broadcast studios, ac plants, concession stands and convention halls, all temporary, amazingly complex, and made out of scaffolding.
Ok, thats my bit about the US Open. It was a great day, and unfortunately, i didnt get ANY pictures…. nobody did. I guess in an effort to keep beeping and flashing down, they prohibited anyone from bringing cameras or cell phones into the club.. it was intense.. we had to go through metal detectors, and then check all of our contraband electronics at the train station. But it did heighten the relaxatlion a bit.. no stupid people not silencing their phones, and no flashes going off everywhere. Hence, the only actual “proof” i was there is this scan of my ticket.
If you have any pics, let me know!

Nostalgia: Mexico
Ahh, college. As you may or may not know, i’m slowly uploading my complete photo archives to flickr.. In the process, i’m getting to check out all sorts of random/lost photo sets. Just found these from me and Steve’s little roadtrip to mexico.
Having spent the previous day skipping class to snowboard in Vail, Steve and I woke up Friday morning and decided it would be a good idea to skip another day of classes and drive to Mexico.
Friday mornin we woke up and got in my car, a ’95 Toyota 4Runner with around 100,000 miles on it. We drove through outlet stores, Garden of the Gods Colorado Springs, CO, Albuquerque NM, Santa Fe NM and finally El Paso TX. We arrived friday night, parked in the lot of a comfort inn, and spent the night in the back of my 4Runner. Next morning, Saturday, woke up, ate the free continental breakfast at Comfort Inn (we were kind of guests…), and walked over the border to Juarez, Mexico. Spent the day walking around, ate some lunch, drank some beers, bonded with locals. Saturday night we drove to Hueco Tanks TX, and then made a b-line for Roswell NM. Sunday we woke up bright and early on the side of the highway outside of Roswell and rolled into town. Spent Sunday in Roswell talking with locals about sightings etc, at with some local Aliens, viewed them in their natural habitats, and then drove back to Boulder. We were back in Boulder by midnight, and woke up for class Monday morning. In all, a decent weekend. -
Apple Store Fifth Ave Opening
Listening to: DJ Mark Farina – Mushroom Jazz 4
Just got back.. from the grand opening of the Apple Store on Fifth Ave, NYC. Jill and I finally got in, after waiting in line for 3 hours, and it was fantastic.. there were about 15 staff member outside clapping and cheering as we went in, and they were handing out amazing grand opening tshirts to everyone! We went straight to the Macbooks, naturally, and Jill and I even got to play with photobooth on a new black Macbook.. fun and exciting. We watched them raffle off a macbook, as we dropped our names in the hat for the next hour.. guess we’ll see if we won one tomorrow. Also, as we were getting ready to leave, Robert Smigel, along with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog came down the stairs, with film crew in tow.. Jill got to pet Triumph, and I took pics and video!
Update Update!
Just found out, we were in the same room as Kevin Bacon! As we were being entertained by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the man himself, Kevin Bacon was chilling out right behind us! Check out this cameo video footage in Richard Blakeley’s movie of the opening. -

Yeah so, i havent posted in a while, but that doesnt mean i’m gone. just been super busy with work, and as far as putting stuff on the web, i have! I been quite addicted to FLICKR lately. I bought a pro membership, and am currently in the process of uploading ALL of my old pictures to it (although most are ‘private’, its still cool to have them online for myself). I’m up to about 7800 now, after month 2 of being a member, and i’m waiting for next month to put more on, because i allready filled my 2gb monthly quota this month! Anyway, i’ll be making a lot more pics “public” and “friends only” soon.. just have to find the time to troll through all the sets and add captions and descriptions, change the sharing levels etc.. 7800 is a lot of photos to get through… and i’m only halfway done.
Stay tuned. Also, stay tuned for a pic or two from my sister Jill’s college graduation!

Chris was in town this weekend, and his job paid for him to stay at the Gansvoort Hotel in the meat packing district of NYC. So we did the only natural thing.. chilled in robes by the pool and read the paper. Also, had a few drinks on the rooftop.

This evening, a group of us got together at Jesse S’s apartment in the East Village, NYC to have a little sunday dinner, chill on the rooftop and fire escape, drink some wine and proseco, and just chill out. It was a fantastic afternoon, and the weather, food, and company were perfect. We even had three sets of siblings!

Britney Spears giving birth
Listening to: Soundgarden – Superunknown
Ah, last friday, Jill and I went out to Williamsburg, to see “The Birth of Sean Preston” by Daniel Edwards, featuring a life sized sculpture of Britney Spears giving birth to her son, Sean Preston, on her hands and knees, gripping the ears of a wolf skin rug. In pink plaster. Incredible. I’d been reading about this whole situation for weeks in gawker, boing boing etc, and it was a fluke that I was checking out Pink Is The New Blog, and read that the opening was that night! A quick call to Jill, and we were off on the (L) train, flying over to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to witness the spectacle, and drink free beer.
Comment? Yes???

Last night, Kat and I went to the Guggenheim Museum for the Flavorpill First Fridays event, with RJD2 DJing… was a great party, especially since we were drinking for free, seeing a ton of cool people, and listening to great music…. The Guggenheim was a n incredible place to have this kind of party.. so many people there, and it was great wandering around the spiral ramp with hip hop beats wafting through the air.
This picture is a composite of 6 seperate pics i took. No fancy tricks, i just went midway up the ramp, rested my cameara on the guardrail, and tilted it a little after each pic. You can see the seams where the pictures merge. Since i was using just a normal camera with a normal lense, and not really paying too much attention to uniform metering and focus, a lot of the lines don’t line up. I didnt try to correct this too much in photoshop. But its a 180 Degree vertical panorama, going from looking straight down to looking straight up.

Also, video of RJD2 on the decks… good stuff, and you can see him using the turntables to controll the digital audio stream from his laptop. Cool.
