Paris Hilton VideoThanksgiving break was good… saw the family, ate skyline chili etc. This week and next week are the last 2 weeks of classes, and I have more work than ever. Also, I’m in the process of buying a pair of turntables and perhaps some other equiptment, in hopes of starting to do more live dj gigs… should be interesting.

Finally, for your amusement, I give you two videos.

First, the BEER DICE video, which I made while bored one saturday night at home. Good fun, tell me what you think.

Second, is the PARIS HILTON video, complete with that eerie night vision green tinge. Click the link and then click open.

garage a trois at the fox

Last night Matt, Lauren and I went to see Garage a Trois at the Fox Theater. Incredible show, they even recorded it live and sold copies of the show directly after.. pretty cool. As usual, Skerik was absolutely insane, Charlie Hunters 8 string bass/guitar was amazing, and Stan Moore’s drums were on the spot. “The crowd was huge and so were the beats.” hehe.

Here’s a review from allmusic.com of the bands latest album, Emphasizer.

The first Garage a Trois EP (Mysteryfunk) came out of sessions for Stanton Moore’s first album, All Kooked Out! While All Kooked Out! was funky and swinging, the Garage a Trois release was all improvised, moodier, and had a darker, dub-like feel. Five years later, after numerous gigs, Garage a Trois is back with Emphasizer, the group’s first full-length recording. For this one, Stanton Moore (drums), Skerik (sax, keys), and Charlie Hunter (eight-string guitar) have added percussionist Mike Dillon, and their sound has evolved to somewhere between those first sessions together (All Kooked Out!, Mysteryfunk). There’s still plenty of funk and groove, but plenty of extra atmosphere as well, often courtesy of Skerik’s excellent analog synth touches (he’s great on sax as well). Hunter continues to amaze; just check his nimble fretwork on “Plena for My Grundle.” Listeners also get a chance to hear him hit the distortion and rock out (while still throwing down basslines!), as on “A-Frame” and “Delta Skelta.” Of course, Moore plays great on the drum kit, and Dillon colors things nicely with his vibes, marimba, and other percussion goodies. Emphasizer is a great record by what’s become a fantastic side project; let’s hope that more is heard from these guys. — Sean Westergaard of Allmusic.com

  • Still in the ‘nati

Still nothing interesting has been going on… Sean and I went to Pirates Cove and Jillians the other day… below is a portion of an email i wrote to Martina, my Czech friend…

hey hey, how are you? its good to hear from you… yes yes, i know i havent gotten back to you in a while…. ive been super ultra busy pretty much re-starting my life in the united states. Ive been in Cincinnati at my parents house for a while now.. seeing old high school friends and getting stufff arranged to come out to boulder. On thursday my dad and are are driving my car back out there, and then i start my summer class on tuesday. The person i was goign to live with in july bailed out on my, so i think im goign to have to live in the dorms again…should be interesting..hhee, maybe i will get some pre-freshman roomate who is trying to get a “head start” on college or whatever… that would be most excelent. ITs cool that your staying in touch with people from our trip…oh yeah, and how it jitka doing? i really liked the pictures she sent to me… if you see her, tell her i said hi or whatever. When do you go back to CZ??? How are things going in london? any new pictures? i will send you some pictures as soon as i can, but it might be a while….. my digital camera broke 2 days after i got back, so i had to send it in… it will take a while for them to fix it. I feel like this is a dry letter, but thats proboboly because i havent been doing anything!

    See ya!

  • Nothing interesting

Yeah so, i know i havent been updating my blog alot lately but really, thats because nothing worthwhile has really happened. I got back from Europe a little while ago, and now im chilling at home in Ohio, cleaning up some stuff and getting ready to go out to colorado. I wasnt able to find a place to live next year, so i think i may end up having to live in the dorms in july and pray i find a place to live…so if you need a roomate or know anyone who needs a roomate, let me know.

Also, the other night at about 5am, while everyone was asleeping, a giant, 60 foot high tree in my back yard fell…the whole base of the trunk just snapped off and the whole thing fell on the barn in our backyard…it was amazing…i didnt wake up or anything, but i took a bunch of pictures the next morning for the insurance deal and whatnot…

Im kind of missing being in europe, chilling with all my friends, especially those crazy Czechs…you know who you are..But it will be good to get back to boulder and get back to Radio1190 and back to school, start up my life again, make some new friends and whatnot.

Oh, i was bored the other night so i made a profile on CampusHook.com… check ouy my profile and give me a good rating

    Subject: Going to England

Ok, so I just booked my plane tickets to London, England. I’ll be leaving Granada on Tuesday, take a bus to Madrid, and then fly Madrid to London on Wednesday. I’m returning to Madrid on the 19th, and flying home from Madrid on the 20th.

I don’t really know why I’m going to England. I found a really good fare online, and decided why not, its time for a change anyway. I’m thinking about finding a hostel in the city and spending my fist week in the city proper, seeing some shows and going to the museums and clubs etc, then taking the remaining week and a half to check out the English “countryside”. If you have any suggestions as to what I should do in London, or know where I should stay, let me know!

    Exploring Tangier, Morocco

Exploring Tangier, Morocco – Photoset and trip report.

    Trip Report by Jane Berentson

So I knew we were going to be safe. On the four hour bus ride to Algeciras, Jeff showed me his arsenal of safety contraptions. A few locks, some steal cable, a belt with secret chambers, an underwear wallet, a slash-proof steal mesh bag, and some metal niner to shove in the door jam. Hum the MacGyver theme if you know it. I showed him my vast collection of Spanish pop CDs. Hum Alex Ubago if you know it. You don’t.

Friday morning we embarked for Tang?r on a rather impressive boat. It swayed, we slept. Once our passports were stamped (in arabic, oh yeah) we decided to take a bus tour with what felt like a group of martini tipping spanish middle aged country clubbers. Since Tang?r was originally occupied by a handful of other nations, spain, france, belguim, yawn, we cruised through all those neighborhoods, a cave, and some palaces. All not nearly as exciting as camels. And to the joy of all my discovery Chanel/animal planet/zoo lover dreams, there were two baby ones. They were almost as cute as the Atlantic hugging its baby brother the Mediterranean just in front of our eyes.

Saturday morning I forgot about the two hour time difference and sound the reverie at seven, but the free continental breakfast was worth it. Almost. I will never feel comfortable drinking OJ out of a wine glass. So we walked for about eight hours, did a sociological study of Moroccan six-year-olds, held our breath through a fish market, paid respects at a cemetery, and tried to politely but sternly refuse the solicitations of the local merchants whose offers were as nagging as the depressing urine/trash rancid stench. I just don’t need any bongo drums. I am better at this that Jeff. I say Yes more, but I can shake them off faster. I’m tough like that. Oh and I almost

forgot. There was this natural pharmacist dude who I believe could have a very successful infomercial. I mean, who wouldn’t turn down a special herb that cures snoring, diabetes, hangovers, obesity, and impotence? Only for one easy payment of 4?! Meanwhile, we made a friend, Isabel from Madrid. She handled the whole traveling with your family thing very well for a nineteen year old. After a day of fasting (except for an encounter with a hole in the wall bread dude) there was a lengthy Moroccan food binge, highlighted by belly dancers, some fire trick guy, traditional music, and even audience participation. Don’t ask Jeff about it though. He was too busy hiding his face so the sultry sequin lady wouldn’t lure him onto the dance floor.

By Sunday I was ready to sink my stinky feet in some spanish soil. Apparently, so were two Moroccan teenagers who tried to sneak on our boat. Two and some hours later we moved and continued to teach Isabel and her brothers that EgyptianRatScrew/RussionBootySlapper card game. Victor dominated. And about that whole Casablanca terrorist thing, yes, a ginourmous catastrophe. I mean, I can run fast and kick hard and Jeff has got all those James Bond safety toys, but there is so much nasty danger that is out of our greasy little hands. Como es la vida.

    Venga. Jane

Climber Pinned by Boulder Cuts Off Arm to Live

    Fri May 2, 2003 01:48 PM ET

DENVER (Reuters) – A mountaineer pinned by a heavy boulder in an eastern Utah desert cut off his right arm with a pocketknife after he determined that was the only way he would survive, officials said on Friday. “He’s pretty darn tough. He wanted to live. He saved himself,” Sgt. Mitch Vetere of the Emery County Sheriff’s Office in Green River, Utah, told Reuters.Aron Ralston, 27, of Aspen, Colorado, used a pocketknife to cut off his arm below the elbow, then rappelled down a rock wall and hiked until he ran into some hikers who flagged down a rescue helicopter 60 miles south of Green River on Thursday. He had applied a tourniquet to his arm. Vetere said Ralston would never have been spotted in the remote area where he was pinned by the boulder, which rescuers estimated at between 800 and 1,000 pounds. Ralston was hiking into a canyon on Saturday when the boulder fell on him. He ran out of water on Tuesday and by Thursday realized he had to take the drastic action. He was in serious condition on Friday at St. Mary’s Hospital in western Colorado, spokeswoman Kim Williams said. A rescuer who went back to see if he could retrieve the arm said the boulder was too heavy to move, according to Vetere.

  • Spring Break in Italy

    Spring Break in Italy

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/jamfan2/123625558/

For spring break this year (called Semana Santa in Spain), I went to Barcelona (Spain), Milan, Florence and Venice (Italy) with Matt, Liz and Alexis. The trip was amazing. It took us forever to secure our tickets, but finally we managed to book a flight from Barcelona to Milan…our way to italy. So we started out from Granada, and took a grueling 14 hour bus ride from Granada to Barcelona. In Barcelona, we got a hostel centrally located in Plaza Real. Plaza Real is abou 10 steps away from las ramblas in Barcelona, and close to all the bars and clubs… it was great.. We even found this other hostel next to us called Kabul. Kabul was a normal hostel, except at night, the cafeteria area turned into an amazing ultra cheap travlers bar/party. So in Barcelona, we spent our nights partying at Kabul and going to different discos around the city, and During the 3 days there we visited the Sangrada Familia, Parque Guell, Joan Miro Museum, Parque Monjuic, Las Ramblas, and saw the GreenPeace “Rainbow Warrior” (see April 13th posting for photo and sarcastic comments). Barcelona was great.

Next, we hopped on a plane and flew to Milan, Italy. In Milan, we spent our 2 days there chilling by the Duomo. Milan was fun, and it had a signifigantly different “business” atmosphere, unline most of the other cities we visited. Another cool think about milan was that there were trains rolling around the city everywhere, on tracks embedded into the cobblestone roads.

Next, we took the train over to Florence. In florence, we stayed with Alexis’ friend Curt for a few days, sleeping on his wonderful tile floor. One of the nights, I met up with Nathlie P, who is living in Florence studying painting. We went out to dinner and she was nice enough to let me stay at her place that night. It was great seeing her, especially in Florence…. Nathlie is the best artist I know. (I’ll let you know if I can get any of her work online) Other things that we did in Florence included stting all of the museums, chillin by the duomo, seeing Michaelangelos David, and partying a lot at a bunch of cool parties. Curt was super nice for letting us stay with him for a few days and he also showed us around Florence.

Alexis stayed with Curt in Florence on day 5 of our trip, and Matt Liz and I went by train to Venice. Wow. Venice was incredible. We found a good cheap hostel room in venice, and spent our 2 days there really just chilling out and walking around. Venice is one of the most amazing cities i have ever been to. There are canals everywhere, and the buildings really are built coming right out of the water. Tourists on gondolas are everywhere, and there is also a venice public transit system, which consists of “bus stops” on the edge of the water, being serviced by large boats which cart people around venice, much like busses or the subway, but on water. It was amazing. After venice we spent 23 hours of continuous travel getting back to granada the next morning in time for spanish class. Amazing.

  • Venice Tomorrow

Not a real exciting post, but tomorrow we’re waking up at 7am and hopping on a train to Venice, Italy. Hopefully it won’t be too submerged.

Also, last night I slept over at Nathlie’s place…(a friend from high school) she’s studying and painting for a while here in Florence, it was great seeing her again for the first time in a while… and especially in Florence… this town is beautifull. This morning I went to see Michaelangelo’s “David” and went inside the Duomo in Florence.

More on Venice later…stay tuned for photos of everything after I return to Granada on Monday…

I’m now in Florence, Italy. Got here last night, and immediately met our friend Kurt who lives here. We dropped our stuff off at his place, and immediately went out. Incredibly, we found a big group of Italians who were going to a University party, so we followed them there. It was great…Live band on one side of a huge courtyard and Reggae DJ on the other side. After that we watched Office Space (in English!!) and went to bed. This morning Matt and I woke up and walked around town for a bit. Don’t know whats in store for tonght, but Thursday I’m excited to see Nathlie, who i havent really seen since High School…. The real pictures will be online as soon as I get back.

    >Subject: Greenpeace “Rainbow Warrior”

Oh man oh man oh man. So I’ve been chilling in Barcelona for the past few days, gearing up to go to Italy on Monday. Last night, Matt, Alexis, Liz and I were out on the pier in Barcelona after dinner chilling out, and lo an behold, we found the GREENPEACE RAINBOW WARRIOR docked in the harbor. You’ve got to be kidding me. It’s this huge green sailboat, with a “fun and exciting” rainbow stripe painted on it, with Rainbow Warrior painted on the bow. Also, stored on the deck of the boat, are 4 Greenpeace “Rogue Battle Dingies” waiting to sabatoge an oil rig or something. Amazing, Check out the photo of it below…

Also, today we all went to see the Sangrada Familia, this huge amazing church designed by Anton Gaudi, and then we went to Parque Monjuic, to chill. Tonight, we will go back to the other hostel, which has a great cafateria in it with a great bar, where all the international traveling kids chill everynight…its great, party hostel.
