My first stop in Japan was Tokyo, to run the 2015 Tokyo Marathon. Miho and I had originally entered the marathon registration lottery months before, however unfortunately, only I won an entry. I still had a good run without her – although not nearly as much fun or motivation to kick ass!

Running through the streets of Tokyo was an energizing experience. I ran the full marathon without really much training since I was in Antarctica beforehand. However, the energy of the cheering crowd lining all 26 miles of the course kept me going. Here a few pics from the run.

The Tokyo Marathon expo was held at the Tokyo Big Sight event hall - a giant conference hall with lots of spaces. The strucutre itself is quite epic to begin with.

    Picked up my number!

Walking through the registration expo, everybody gets lots of promo items. Although this looks like I was receiving a magical free beer.. it was in fact a nonalcoholic "malt drink". Hmmm.

The next morning at the starting area - there were three snacks to have before the race. Tomatoes, bananas, and an apple flavored energy gel, which came out of a foil "capri-sun"-like packet. I had all three, and then packed up my pre-race gear into my baggage bag, and gave it to the appropriate baggage truck. Typical marathon procedure, almost exaclly the same as before the NYC Marathon.

I finished in 4:31. It wasn't my best marathon time, but it felt great to run, and was fun to see lots of neighborhoods of Tokyo.

    Entering Cambodia via Phnom Penh

Vietnam was great, and I really wish I could have spent much more time there. It’s certainly a country worth returning to. However, I was on a somewhat tight schedule, and still wanted to see Cambodia. I took a bus across from Saigon to Phnom Penh, and checked into the Mad Monkey Hostel in the middle of downtown.

First, and continuing impressions of Phnom Penh were good. The city is arranged on a neat grid, and while walking around, seemed significantly more cosmopolitan than I had expected. There’s a certain energy in the air, feeling like things are changing and improving everywhere. Lots of building projects are taking place, and people seem generally happy.

I only had two days in Phnom Penh, and made the most of my time.

On the evening I arrived, I took a walk across town to the Royal Palace – which was beautiful. On my way out, I noticed a few event tents being setup across the way, and went to investigate. It turned out that the Phnom Penh International Half Marathon was being run the very next morning, and I was just in time to register. I registered for the full distance, and immediately made my way back to the hostel to sleep.

Next morning, I woke up and ran the half marathon, which was great. Running a race through a new town was a great way to get to see everything, and I ended up doing fairly well.

Later that day, I took a brief trip out to the gun range, visited the Killing Fields and S21, and then had a dinner at a rooftop restaurant. Phnom Penh was great, and the next morning I departed for Siem Reap.

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (Khmer: ???????????????????????????????????????????) is a museum in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The site is a former high school which was used as the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21) by the Khmer Rouge regime from its rise to power in 1975 to its fall in 1979. Tuol Sleng (Khmer [tu?l slae?]) means “Hill of the Poisonous Trees” or “Strychnine Hill”. Tuol Sleng was only one of at least 150 execution centers in the country,[1] and as many as 20,000 prisoners there were killed.

  • Faster and Faster at the Olympics

Faster and Faster at the Olympics

The NY Times recently posted this excellent explainer feature documenting how Olympic sports have gotten faster and faster over the years. The piece focuses on the Men’s 100-Meter Sprint, but covers other important events, like the 100 meter freestyle swim, and long jump.

    From NY Times:

Based on the athletes’ average speeds, if every Olympic medalist raced each other, Usain Bolt (the London version) would win, with a wide distribution of Olympians behind him. Below, where each sprinter would be when Bolt finishes his race.

Amazingly, todays 8 year old kids are running as fast as some of the first Olympians. Chalk it up to training, nutrition, or gear – it’s still amazing, and a definite sign of the times. Video below, and click through for the full interactive spread.

  • Running in Newark

Finally, an outside run for the week. After National Registry EMT-B testing, we got out of class a bit early. There was just enough sunlight left for a quick 5 mile run out to the industrial wasteland surrounding Newark, California.

Running into 2012 with the New York Road Runners

New years eve always sucks. You always end up getting very excited and concerned over having the “perfect” new years, and being in the best spot right at midnight.. and inevitably, it never happens. At least for me, in many past years, although I’ve been in good places I’m always just short of the absolute best place for new years. So, I’ve grown to not expect a lot out of new years.

This new years eve was my first one in the city I’m living. Traditionally, I’ve always been traveling over the new year. But this time I was right smack in the middle of NYC.

  • Videoblog: On the Finish Line of the 2011 NYC Marathon

A few thoughts moments after finishing the NYC Marathon in 03:53. I ran with my Apple iPhone 4 in a n armband, although I didn’t use it to listen to music or track anything.

  • Accidental Half Marathon? Hello 4-Mile Canyon.

After training for about a month at 9,000 feet in Telluride, Colorado, running in Boulder at about 5,000 feet felt great. I initially intended to go out for a quick 5K jog, but got caught up in the good vibes of Boulder Canyon and 4-Mile Canyon and ended up hacking out a half marathon. Kick ass!

Here’s the track and statistics recorded by my beloved, and usually-working Garmin Forerunner 310XT. Despite a few software and usability bugs, this is a great training computer.

  • 10 Mile Trail Run in Leadville Around Turquoise Lake

Today after WFR class, my friend Amber and I took a beautiful 10mile trail run around Turquoise Lake, just outside of Leadville, Colorado. Amber is a three time finisher of the Leadville Trail 100 race, and it was interesting running with her to hear about the world of ultra running. Taking it slow and long for runs is great – allows you to see the scenery, go for a long time, and most importantly, get to know your running partner.

  • Running the 2011 Bolder Boulder 10km Road Race

Today in the Memorial Day tradition, I ran the Bolder Boulder 10km Road Race. It’s a great race through the streets of Boulder, Colorado, giving a complete tour of the town. I’ve been running this race since college, and every year it’s great. The entire town comes out to watch, everybody has fun, and the course is actually quite nice to run – enough hills to keep things interesting , but not too many. The finish is in the University of Colorado’s Folsom Stadium, where you get to run a complete lap around the field level of the stadium before finishing.

This year I ran with my Garmin Forerunner 310XT GPS watch to record a GPS track. Also, took a few quick photos while walking the course with a few friends. The race was on Sunday, May 30th, 2011. Here are my official results. (more…)
