  • Making a Crater in Antarctica

    Making a Crater in Antarctica

In order to dispose of a few pounds of PETN explosives at WAIS Divide Field Camp, the decision was made to simple blow them up under the snow. The alternative was to go through the certification process for transporting by air back to McMurdo, which would have been a bit overkill, given the small amount of explosives remaining. I believe this was about 15lbs of explosives, buried a few feet under the snow. Everybody stood a long ways back, and the resulting explosion made a huge plume of burnt snow, and left a nice sized crater. Never a dull moment at WAIS!

    Orion – NASA’s Newest Spacecraft

Love this explainer video – can’t wait for the first full launch!

As the flight test of NASA’s Orion spacecraft nears, the agency released Wednesday a video — called “Trial By Fire” — detailing the spacecraft’s test and the critical systems engineers will evaluate during the Dec. 4 flight.

Orion is in the final stages of preparation for the uncrewed flight test that will take it 3,600 miles above Earth on a 4.5-hour mission to test many of the systems necessary for future human missions into deep space. After two orbits, Orion will reenter Earth’s atmosphere at almost 20,000 miles per hour, and reach temperatures near 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit before its parachute system deploys to slow the spacecraft for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

On future missions, Orion will carry astronauts farther into the solar system than ever before, including to an asteroid and Mars. From NASA

    Johnny Express

    Cute video, from Alfred Imageworks.

    It’s 2150

There are all sorts of Aliens living throughout space.
Johnny is a Space Delivery Man who travels to different planets to deliver packages.
Johnny is lazy and his only desire is to sleep in his autopilot spaceship.
when the spaceship arrives at the destination, all he has to do is simply deliver the box.
However, it never goes as planned. Johnny encounters strange and bizarre planets
and always seems to cause trouble on his delivery route.

Will he be able to finish his mission without trouble?

Crazy structures for the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup, including all sorts of overhanging, free floating barrels, and convoluted shapes. We got to see a few of these recently in Ouray, Colorado.

The Coldest Place in the World: Dome Argus, East Antarctica

NASA recently revealed that a spot in Antarctica just hit a record -135.3 degrees F below zero – that’s cold! In my time at the south pole, the coldest I experienced was -60F – not even close to the record.

    Fron NBC News:

Ice scientist Ted Scambos at the National Snow and Ice Data Center said the new record is “50 degrees colder than anything that has ever been seen in Alaska or Siberia or certainly North Dakota.”

“It’s more like you’d see on Mars on a nice summer day in the poles,” Scambos said, from the American Geophysical Union scientific meeting in San Francisco Monday, where he announced the data. “I’m confident that these pockets are the coldest places on Earth.”

    Here’s a quick explainer video.

  • How A Leica Lens Is Made

I love getting into the tech of cameras. Digital cameras nowadays are incredibly sophisticated, and perform in an amazing range of situations. To illustrate the complexity of the process of creating a camera lens, here’s a quick video from Leica. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to use one of these when I get my hands on a covert edition Leica M9-P

Leica Lenses (English) from leica camera on Vimeo.

Every Leica lens is hand-crafted and goes through meticulous manufacturing processes to uphold the quality and precision that Leica defines and customers have come to expect. In the age where technology almost inevitably means mass manufacturing, Leica products are still made with exacting precision by the hands of highly-trained technicians.

This video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship and making of Leica lenses in the production facilities of Leica Camera AG.

Previously, I wrote about a cross sectional view of a Leica lens.

Amazing how their system works. The perforated beef patties are cooked in the juices on top of the sauteing onions, and then  the buns are placed on top of the beef patties heated using the onion steam filtering through the perforations in the patties.

“Ascent – Commemorating Shuttle” Launch Documentary

Ascent – Commemorating Shuttle is a new video from the NASA Glenn Research Center, and shows off incredible, slow motion footage from launching the Space Shuttle. This is possibly the most interesting collection of launch footage I’ve seen yet. Most of the footage is captured from “engineering cameras”, which site at strategic points on and around the launch pad, to capture extremely detailed, high framerate, high resolution footage of every aspect of launch. Usually, this footage is simply used to inspect for any launch issues, but in this video it’s used by Matt Melis to explain every detail of launch, in stunning slow motion.
